LINCOLN, Neb. - Most people who buy a security camera are hoping to make their home safer. The Nebraska Attorney General says cameras created by one brand are actually doing the opposite.
Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has filed a lawsuit against Lorex Corporation. He accused the company of deceiving consumers and having serious security flaws with their retail camera equipment. The cameras are sold at Costco stores and other major retailers throughout Nebraska.
“The manufacturer, as well as the sites that are selling these products, are telling consumers that these products, these cameras are safe and they're secure and that they protect their privacy," said Hilgers. "We believe those things are misleading and not ultimately true.”
Lorex was previously owned by Dahua, a Chinese manufacturer of surveillance equipment. In 2022, the FCC severely limited imports of the products due to “national security concerns.”
Hilgers says Lorex and Dahua only separated by name and that the cameras still have security flaws that allow hackers, including those affiliated with the Chinese government, to access video and audio archives.
Hilgers wants the company to be honest with consumers about the security of their cameras or not to sell their product In Nebraska.
“In fact, in our complaint, you will see if you actually go to one of the links through Lorex to be able to login, it takes you to a Dahua website," said Hilgers. "So what were saying is you can sort of change the lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig. Nothing has changed from its underlying infrastructure that enables these securities loopholes and back doors into people's private spaces.”
