WNCC baseball team opens season falling to New Mexico Military

ROSWELL, N.M. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team opened the season falling in a doubleheader to New Mexico Military Institute, dropping the first game 13-3 and then 16-4 in game two.

WNCC and New Mexico Military will play another doubleheader on Saturday.

The first game saw a tight contest to start. New Mexico Military plated two in the first, but saw the Cougars come back with two in the top of the fourth to tie the game. The fourth started when Vaughn Wilson had a leadoff walk and scored on a Catcher Gladysh triple. Gladysh came in to score on a Harrison Hart single.

NMMI responded in the bottom of the fourth with six runs to take an 8-2 lead. WNCC had one in the fifth when Austin Cooper had a lead-off home run. But that was all they could do as NMMI scored five in the bottom of the fifth for the 13-3 win.

WNCC managed six hits in the contest. Hart led the way with two hits, including a double.

The second game saw the Cougars blast two home runs in the contest. NMMI led 13-0 when WNCC got offensive in the fifth. Jude Russell led off the fifth with a solo home run. Then, with one out, Ty Buetner singled followed by a Dakota Alber double. Vaughn Wilson then unloaded on his second pitch for a 3-run home to make it 13-4. That was all they could manage as NMMI scored three in the fifth on a walk-off 3-run home run for the win.

WNCC finished with six hits in the contest, one each from six different players. Wilson led the way with the home run and three RBIs.
