LINCOLN, Neb. — A suspect is hospitalized after exchanging gunfire with a Lincoln police officer early Wednesday morning.
It happened before sunrise at an Office Depot in Lincoln.
Police say an officer found an unidentified 49-year-old man near an access door behind a dumpster. Authorities say the man ignored commands and fired at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking the man in what officials described as a lower extremity.
“The officer’s arrival and the shots fired were less than 90 seconds apart, so this all happened very quickly,” said Lincoln Police Chief Michone Morrow.
“A handgun was recovered at the scene in close proximity to where the suspect was ultimately taken into custody. Once officers determined it was safe to approach, they immediately rendered first aid,” Morrow said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery for multiple non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
“Once released, he will be taken to the Lancaster County Jail for attempted murder, burglary, felony possession of a firearm and possible other charges, as this investigation continues,” Morrow said.
No one else was injured.
The officer involved has not been identified and has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
