COVID deaths in Douglas County surpass 900, ICU beds squeezed

The recent surge in COVID cases and growing flu numbers finds the state’s largest county reporting several potential problems and a new tragic milestone.
On Wednesday the Douglas County Health Department confirmed 735 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the last day, nearly double the usual number of day-to-day cases being reported over the last several weeks.
At the same time the health department reports 247 new cases of the flu in the past week, bringing the season total to 539 cases.
Those numbers are apparently tied to ever fewer hospital beds for those needing them most.
As of Wednesday afternoon there were 35 adult ICU beds available in the county and 13 pediatric ICU beds available.
In recent days COVID deaths in Douglas County, since the pandemic began, surpassed the 900 mark, climbing to 906 with three new deaths reported on Wednesday; three men—one vaccinated, two not vaccinated.
