As News Channel Nebraska first anticipated, GOP Statehouse hopeful Brett Lindstrom now has the official backing of Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert.

Stothert endorsing the Omaha State Senator for governor arguing, “Unlike his opponents, Brett is a proven tax cutter.”

Late last week, Stothert told NCN a political pat-on-the-back from her was a “possibility” though she didn’t say who.

But several GOP insiders expected Stothert would go with Lindstrom.

Stothert’s support is bolstered by former GOP Governor Dave Heineman’s insistence that Lindstrom has the momentum in what has boiled down to a three-man race between Lindstrom, cattle king Charles Herbster and NU Regent Jim Pillen.

At the same time though Heineman—the state’s longest serving governor, who is widely recognized for his nuts-and-bolts political insight and has not endorsed anyone—also said he believes Herbster leads Lindstrom by half a dozen points while Pillen, the one-time frontrunner, has dipped to third.
