GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — It’s National Agriculture Day and fourth graders in Grand Island spent a day learning all about it.

Hall County Ag Day Chair Annette Schimmer said the event serves to educate kids on different aspects of agriculture.

“It gives us a chance to share with them, what agriculture is, how is it all around us, how does it impact us,” Schimmer said. "It gives us a chance to show like where does our food originate from, how does the whole 'field to fork concept' come into play."

Now in its 21st year, more than 750 students from 36 classrooms at 19 different schools around the Grand Island area gathered on the Fonner Park campus. The day is an educational hands-on experience bringing experts from different fields and places in Nebraska.

Kids learned a variety of things from a day in the life of a cow to observing live demonstrations from a horse trainer, horse farrier, and a sheep shearer. They also saw and interacted with several farm animals.

Engleman Elementary fourth grade teacher Kelsie Scheel said the hands-on experience is beneficial to students.

“So, it really exposes them to different kinds of culture things, a lot of them don’t know about agriculture so they learn a lot about farming, even just vocab,” Scheel said. "They get to see different types of animals, they love getting to go around and pet animals, and just exposing them to that agriculture that they don’t see on a daily basis."
