A touchy subject, the future of nuclear power, finds both the Biden Administration and Sen. Pete Ricketts pushing for some key changes.

As the administration moves to pour over a billion dollars in aid to extend the life of distressed nuclear power plants, Ricketts is pushing for some key changes by those in charge of the country’s nuclear plants.

During a Capitol Hill hearing this week, Ricketts asked the head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission why license renewal for some plants is taking longer than the initial licensing.

NRC Chairman Christopher Hanson told Ricketts he didn’t have the answer off the top of his head but would find out, “What exactly is going on here.”

Nebraska has one nuclear power plant, the Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, which according to Ricketts is “clean, safe and reliable” and generates power to 385,000 homes “even in the hottest part of summer.”
