Lincoln Southeast inches past Papillion-La Vista in 10-7 battle
LINCOLN - In a pad popping, hard hitting game at Seacrest field in the capital city, the Lincoln Southeast Knights secure its first win of the season, 10-7 in a gritty battle over Papillion-La Vista.
The Knights entered the game at 0-2 and looked to avoid an 0-3 start, something that hasn't happened since 2015.
The Monarchs were trying to change history of their own and win their first three games of the season for the first time since 2012.
Lincoln Southeast has beaten Papillion-La Vista in three straight seasons, and the Knights got the start they were looking for.
After both teams traded punts, Lincoln Southeast began to push the ball downfield. With 1:07 to play in the first quarter, Owen Baxter handed the ball off to Parker Watson who cut his way for an eight yard touchdown to put the Knights up 7-0.
Both teams continued to stand up defensively into halftime.
Papillion La-Vista came out strong in the third quarter and forced Owen Baxter to throw an interception tipped at the line of scrimmage by Garin Maley and intercepted by Payton Prestito.
The turnover lit a spark in the Monarchs offense and after a methodical drive, Jordan Barrientos scored from seven yards away to knot the game up at 7-7.
Tied heading into the fourth quarter, Lincoln Southeast drove down and got into field goal range, giving Connor Knollenberg a chance to give the Knights the lead.
Knollenberg booted through a 30-yard field goal to put Lincoln Southeast up 10-7 and after a few more defensive stops on each side, the Knights put the nail in coffin by stopping the Monarchs on 4th and 20 at midfield with only 42 seconds left.
Lincoln Southeast gets the 10-7 win over Papillion-La Vista and moves to 1-2 on the season, as the Monarchs fall to 2-1.
