A recent daylight shooting at this midtown Omaha gas station, left one person dead, two wounded and 16-year-old Delvin Amaya charged as an adult with first degree murder, his father 46-year-old Mario Amaya-Castillo, charged with accessory to a felony and tampering with evidence.

The police union using the crime to sound off on Twitter, blaming a “failing (juvenile justice) system” noting what it describes as a “vicious murder by a teenager.”

The chief is also concerned about teen crimes.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, Omaha: “It’s an issue right now in the city of Omaha, the recidivism numbers on juvenile crime speak for themselves, as far as property crimes and violent crimes, that’s basically our intervention over and over again.”

While the Casey’s murder case grabs headlines, police are quick to note recent numbers that in their view finds Omaha getting safer. Homicides down 11 percent, rapes down nine percent, robberies down 31 percent and aggravated assaults down nine percent.
