A move aimed at increasing rail safety in Nebraska went off the rails today.

Lawmakers opposed to a bill requiring at least 2-crew members on freight trains in the state managed to effectively kill the bill with a filibuster.

After the required 8-hours of debate and stalling tactics, a vote was taken but came up nine votes short of stopping any further delays.

As we've reported backers of the 2-crew mandate are still hopeful the federal government will step in and issue a nationwide order.

That could come as early as next month, but there are no guarantees.

In the meantime 11 states have done what Nebraska hasn't.
