And just last month tornadoes hit eastern Nebraska with 165 mile an hour winds.
Local disasters present their own lengthy list of challenges from power outages to gas leaks and more.
But in the aftermath of COVID-19 experts now insist that state and local disaster plans are simply not good enough, that a national all-inclusive health disaster plan is a must.
Enter the University of Nebraska Medical Center, chosen to spearhead plans for large scale health care crises such as COVID and Ebola.
Jeffrey Freeman with the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health tells us, "In the most severe of health crises the standard approach to response will not succeed; we have to be ready to operate in an environment when the rules may not apply"
The med center's Global Center for Health Security a key player in the search for answers to large-scale, worst-case scenarios, yes arguably worse than tornadoes or floods.
