GORDON, Neb. - You probably like to mow your lawn quickly, but have you ever tested your skills in a race?

"There's a strategy?” Tim Tidyman questioned.

Tidyman of Chadron is one of three contestants in a mow-off competition in Gordon. Filling in for his son who’s away at college, Tidyman proudly said, "“I’m a substitute driver."

Meet the other two contestants: Don Kolb of Hay Springs, who admits his wife does most of the mowing, and Sharon Eberly of Gordon.

“I’m down to a push mower right now,” Eberly said.

But how did these three end up in a green-field face-off? Let’s rewind. Earlier, News Channel Nebraska reported on The Twister radio's contest to guess how far a lawnmower could travel before running out of gas. Listeners trimmed their predictions, with the closest guess winning a lawnmower.  These three contestants tied with a guess of 20.5 miles.

“I thought it would go 21 miles, but of course you have to back off because of how fast he was going to run it,” Kolb said.

“I thought it should go around 21 miles, but there’s wind and hills,” Eberly said.

Because of FCC guidelines, the winner of the mower, Kolb, was decided by drawing cards. However, all three took to the grass to compete in a lawnmower obstacle course for a secondary prize - a leaf blower.

“It's a 20 volt DeWalt," Tidyman said.

In a tight finish, Tidyman clipped the competition by less than a second. But by the end, all three learned just how fast they could really cut grass.
