WAYNE, Neb. -- Wayne State College has immortalized the legacy of Dr. Sheila Stearns, dedicating its newest residence hall in her name. From 1999 to 2003, Dr. Stearns led the college with distinction, and though she passed away in 2023, her impact remains vibrant. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, friends and family gathered to celebrate her life, sharing stories of her profound influence on both the college and the wider community.

We named it after Sheila Stearns. She was the first woman president who was very focused on student success, said Wayne State College President Dr. Marysz Rames. “In her inaugural speech,” Sheila said. “Every decision I make, every dollar I spend, every evaluation I write, every goal in my professional life, will be tied to achieving student success and academic quality.”

I think that truly reflects what we want to have happen at Stearns Hall, and the impact we wanted to have on our students' lives,” said Dr. Rames.

“My mom cared so much about the students, It was at the center of everything she did,” said Dr. Sheila Stearns' daughter Malin Stearns Johnson. “She's one of those administrators that always thought about the student experience. Being here today and seeing her honored with a dorm, just feels really perfect. We lost her two years ago, so this also feels like a full circle moment. To be able to come back to where she lived, and worked is really cool.”

The new state-of-the-art, four-story building will offer a mix of suite-styles. The hall will have traditional rooms for 276 students, complete with modern amenities including an open kitchen, expansive lounge, and an exercise area, promising a vibrant community atmosphere.
