Fire department's head-shaving raises thousands for cancer patient
RANDOLPH, Neb.-- A South Dakota boy with cancer is being backed by a northeast Nebraska community after news of his diagnosis.
“Anything anybody did was way more than they had to do. That is for sure,” said Chad Winkelbauer.
Randolph’s assistant fire chief’s four-year-old grandson Lee was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his kidney a few months ago.
When news got out to the Randolph fire department, they decided to hold an event to raise money.
Lee is neither a Randolph native not Nebraskan, yet the community came together to help support his fight with cancer by donating over 30-thousands dollars.
The event included an auction and firefighters also shaved their heads for the cause.
“21 of the 25 firefighter did it, they could opt out with a one hundred dollar donation if they wanted to. Some guys are pretty attached to their beards, so they didn’t do it. Other than that, everyone else did and it was awesome,” said Jim Scott.
A GoFundMe for Lee’s medical bills has already raised over 10-thousands dollars as well.
“It was more than what I expected for sure, but I should’ve known the small town comes together when we need them," said Chad Winkelbauer.
