HERMAN, Neb.— A suspect is in custody after firing multiple times at police with a rifle, officials say.

Washington County deputies say they did a welfare check a man suffering from a mental health episode on Tuesday.

The incident happened at a rural address roughly two miles west of Herman, which is about 12 miles north of Blair.

The man was holding an assault rifle and wearing body armor when police arrived, according to a news release.

The suspect fired multiple rounds three different times while the Washington County Tactical Team attempted to talk to him.

The suspect later surrendered and was taken into custody before being transported to a hospital for evaluation.
