'Beat Distracted Driving' PSA contest for high school students underway
OMAHA, Neb. - The National Safety Council – Nebraska Chapter (NSCN) has announced the launch of “Beat Distracted Driving” public service announcement (PSA) contest for Nebraska high school students. The contest is an initiative funded by a private donor whose family was affected by a distracted driver and sponsored by NSCN to promote distracted driving awareness to Nebraska teens.
“Education is an important part of our strategy to decrease roadway deaths in Nebraska,” Eric Koeppe, President and CEO of the National Safety Council – Nebraska Chapter said. “It’s mission critical that we educate teens about the danger of driving distracted. Tragically, 3,924 Nebraskans were involved in distracted driving crashes in 2020 with 19 fatalities. We feel that this peer-to-peer campaign, driven by students, will help resonate with other students and their families.”
As part of the PSA contest, Nebraska high school students will produce a 30-second video using the theme “Beat Distracted Driving”. The students will share their video on their social media accounts and promote others to like and share. A winning PSA from each school class (A, B, C, D), will be chosen plus a Spanish speaking submission for a total of 5 - $2,000 winners. Submissions will be judged on the message and a social media score which will be tracked via Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram using the NSCN hashtag and the school’s specific hashtag. Each winning PSA will receive $2,000 and have its winning PSA broadcast on local TV stations in their respective areas.
Students must register and submit their hashtag information to NSCN for tracking purposes. The campaign will run through the end of April (Distracted Driving Awareness Month). Winners will be notified the first week of May after their social media score has been tallied.
