OPD: Mass shootings result in new training, tip line
The extra drills will focus on “active killer/threat response, single officer response and ‘stop the bleed’ medical training.”
In the aftermath of several recent mass shootings, including the Texas massacre which left two teachers and 19 young children dead, the Omaha Police Department is announcing added training and a new tip line.
According to OPD, the additional training is specifically targeted to those officers, School Resource Officers, who patrol a number of metro area schools.
We’re told state law requires SRO’s receive a minimum 20 hours of training in addition to OPD’s annual in-service training, which will now be supplemented by eight more hours.
The extra drills will focus on overall “active killer/threat response, single officer response and ‘stop the bleed’ medical training.”
OPD says the new tip line, Threat Incident Prevention System (TIPS), will “allow the public to provide information on behaviors of concern and possible criminal activity” which will be examined by the department’s threat experts and investigative units.
