The fight over state tax dollars going to private schools, commonly known as school choice, is roaring in the Legislature with a close vote looming.

The bill would set aside millions of dollars in tax credits to organizations that provide scholarships to private schools.

State Sen. Lou Ann Linehan, an Elkhorn Republican, says the scholarships would prioritize families who can’t afford to send their kids to private schools.

Critics see it as an economic drain on public schools.

The bill is backed by Gov. Jim Pillen and has the support of 31 lawmakers, 28 Republicans and three Democrats.

That’s just two votes short of the 33 needed to move the bill forward.

That vote is likely tomorrow.

The bill would cost the state an estimated $93 million over the next three years.
