Three Democrats and two Republicans have made the final cut for a vacant seat on the Omaha City Council.

The five, no strangers to politics, are looking to be named to the District 4 South Omaha slot held until recently by Vinny Palermo, who has pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge and is facing 21 months in federal prison.

Topping the list in terms of City Hall experience is former 4-term Democrat Councilman Garry Gernandt, who left the seat, deciding not to run, in 2017.

The other two Democrats are Ron Hug, the former 8-year Chair of the Douglas County Democratic Party (1996-2004), and Eric Servellon.

According to his resume, Servellon is a 2nd generation Latino-American who “grew up in poverty” and has “experience representing South Omaha on the Learning Community.”

The two Republicans are Rebecca Barrientos-Patlan and Terri Blackburn.

Barrientos-Patlan has run for the South Omaha seat before and lost, Blackburn spent five years working for Republican Mayor Jean Stothert.

The council will be holding public interviews with the five September 7.
