As she runs for a third term in 2024 Sen. Deb Fischer. a Republican, is no longer unopposed.

Omaha union leader and Navy veteran Dan Osborn is taking Fisher on as an independent, announcing "If something's broken, I roll up my sleeves and fix it."

As for the Democrats, earlier this year party leader Jane Klebb told me someone is coming:

Jane Kleeb, NE Democratic Party Chair: "We will absolutely have a Democrat challenging Ricketts who was appointed. And we will have a Democrat opposing Fischer as well."

Joe Jordan, NCN: "Are they names people are going to recognize when they stand up?"

Kleeb: "I think that they'll be names people recognize, yes."

As for the 48-year-old Osborn according to his announcement, he gained "national attention" two years ago leading the "successful strike" at Kellogg's in Omaha saving "500 middle class jobs."

Fisher was first elected in 2012 in a landslide, defeating former Nebraska Senator and Governor Bob Kerrey.

So far Ricketts, who was appointed by Gov. Jim Pillen when Ben Sasse resigned, has one announced primary opponent for the 2024 race, former 1st District Congressional candidate John Glen Weaver. Weaver ran in the GOP primary in 2022, getting 6 percent of the vote.
