Husker notes: Nebraska falls in pitcher's duel on Friday in Michigan
By NU Athletic Communications
Nebraska saw its 11-game win streak come to an end, as the Huskers fell 2-1 to Michigan in the series opener at Ray Fisher Stadium on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Nebraska (16-6, 3-1 Big Ten) scored one run on eight hits, while Michigan (11-9, 1-3 Big Ten) totaled two runs, six hits and an error.
Mac Moyer led the Big Red with a 2-for-5 afternoon that included a double, and Devin Nunez was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Case Sanderson drove in Nebraska’s lone run on a sacrifice fly, and Jeter Worthley, Rhett Stokes and Miken Miller tallied one hit each.
Ty Horn took the loss in his first decision of the season, allowing two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts across 4.2 innings. Caleb Clark, Tucker Timmerman and Grant Cleavinger combined to throw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, as the NU pitching staff teamed up to not allow a hit over the final 5.1 innings.
Nebraska grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first when Moyer doubled down the first-base line and Worthley singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Sanderson’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Moyer to give the Huskers the one-run advantage.
Michigan answered in the second with a pair of singles and a stolen base to tie the game at one.
The Wolverines took the lead for good in the third with an RBI single after two singles earlier in the inning to make it a 2-1 game through three innings.
The Husker offense stranded a pair of baserunners in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t plate the tying run.
Nebraska threatened in the top of the ninth with two outs after Nunez was hit by a pitch and Stokes singled through the right side to put runners on first and second, but the Wolverines induced a groundout to first to preserve the 2-1 win over the Huskers on Friday evening.
Nebraska and Michigan continue the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch between the Huskers and Wolverines is set for 1 p.m. CT on B1G+.
