MAXWELL, Neb. — Fire activity on the Cottonwood Fire intensified Saturday afternoon as extreme weather conditions fueled movement within pockets of unburned vegetation, according to fire officials.

In an update released at 6 p.m. MDT, Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 said shifting conditions led to significant fire behavior, contributing to the ignition and loss of three unoccupied responder vehicles. All firefighters assigned to the incident were evaluated, and no injuries were reported.

An investigation into the vehicle loss is underway. Officials said no additional details are being released at this time.

Despite the flare-up, the fire remains within established containment lines, and crews continue working to hold the perimeter. Firefighters are expected to remain engaged in active suppression efforts as conditions allow.

The Cottonwood Fire has burned 128,289 acres and is 94% contained.

Officials emphasized there is currently no immediate threat to the public.

However, with fire behavior increasing, crews are urging the public to avoid fire zones for both firefighter and civilian safety.
