Authorities: Following urgent search and chase, homicide suspect shot and killed by police

Following an urgent search, an Omaha man, a suspect in a Saturday morning homicide, was shot and killed by police several hours later.
Omaha Police tell us the search for 41-year-old Matthew Briggs began early Saturday after Briggs assaulted a woman inside her southwest Omaha home, the woman got away and called 9-1-1. By the time police arrived Briggs was gone.
Police say they then learned that Briggs drove his car, a red 2005 Century Buick, through the garage door of another southwest Omaha home where he shot at a neighbor before taking off.

A tip then sent police to the upscale Regency neighborhood, 9927 Essex Drive, where they found the body of 52-year-old Steven Donsback, who had been shot.
Based on various information, police began searching for Briggs, whose car, with no one in it, was spotted after 1 p.m. by a citizen 13 miles away near Mandan Park in South Omaha.
Just after 3:30, police learned of an armed carjacking near the park; the suspect driving the stolen car matching Briggs’ description.
Police say they quickly spotted the car, a blue Toyota Camry, which led to a 13-mile chase to the east side of Council Bluffs, where both an Omaha police officer and a Council Bluffs officer opened fire on Briggs, who was shot and killed inside the Toyota, where police found two firearms.
The investigation into all this, which involves police in Omaha, Sarpy County, and Council Bluffs continues.
According to court records, nearly ten years ago Briggs was convicted of felony-theft in Douglas County.
